The Mitre is a friendly, traditional-style London ‘local’, housed within an imposing Victorian Grade II listed building.
With a wide range of award-winning Young’s beers, world lagers and fine wines, The Mitre attracts a good cross section of Bayswater residents. There is also a steady stream of tourists, no doubt enticed by the warm, relaxed atmosphere and excellent service.
The man most responsible for the high standards here is James Platford, the pub’s manager. James also oversees Old Mary’s, a speakeasy-style basement bar, now established in the building’s original servants’ quarters.
The bar is named after a former maid and mistress of Lord Craven, Mary, who was allegedly stabbed to death by Lady Craven in the old scullery. Over the years people have claimed to hear Mary ‘sniveling in the shadows’ and there have been ‘sightings’. Such has been the interest in the story that paranormal investigations have even taken place and, although nothing has been proven, nothing has been ruled out either!
Although the ghostly stories persist, the basement bar is now better known for its weekly jazz sessions, bottled craft beers and twisted classic cocktails. However, it does serve a mean Bloody Mary…
