One of London’s best-loved galleries for modern and contemporary art, the Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park attracts up to 800,000 visitors a year. The Gallery’s world-renowned, temporary exhibition programme showcases work by the world’s finest artists, operating across a wide range of media.
The exhibitions have included shows by established practitioners, such as Bridget Riley, as well as those by artists who, at the time, were aiming to establish their reputations, such as Damien Hirst. In the grounds is a permanent work by artist and poet Ian Hamilton Finlay, dedicated to the Gallery’s former Patron, Diana, Princess of Wales. The work comprises eight benches, a tree plaque and a carved stone circle at the Gallery’s entrance. The Gallery’s new space, the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, opens this summer. An innovative arts venue, it will be housed in the building formerly known as The Magazine.
