Word on the Water is the quirky Londoner’s answer for satiating their quintessential book tastes while relaxing on the canal. Situated just off the North Wharf Road in Paddington at the London Book Barge, Word on the Water offers an eclectic range of quality, second-hand books ranging from the classics to popular fiction, and is a favoured choice for both visitors and locals alike.
Since its creation four years ago, this charming shop hasn’t only become a characteristic part of the canal community but a gathering for book lovers. Store owners John and Paddy – who spent several years working to help rehabilitate former addicts – alongside the resident bookshop cat - offer a unique experience where readers can peruse beloved titles away from the hectic hustle of the city, yet still stay conveniently close to central locations.
Thanks to Booker prize winner Ben Okri, the bookshop is now a permanent fixture in the community. It’s the best place to find excellent second-hand paperbacks for just £3 or £4 for hardbacks as well as new editions, and stunning collections like the Beatrix Potter box set.
As well as its fine selection of reading material, Word on the Water features live music nights, book readings and launches for a mere £3 – an ideal locale for writers, readers and artists to network and mingle with the added allure of mulled wine and other goodies.
With its endearing setting and fantastic quality books, Word on the Water is your ultimate port of call for your next literary voyage.
Open from 11am to 7pm Wednesday to Sunday. Closest tube station: Paddington Underground.
