Officially known as The Regent’s Park, this now built up Regent’s park property area was once part of the ancient Forest of Middlesex. But, according to our Regent’s Park estate agent, in the mid-16th century, Henry Vlll had it turned into a hunting ground and, for a period, it became known as Marylebone Park. For 200 years ownership chopped and changed, until finally the land was deemed a prime site for development. The architect John Nash was engaged (under patronage of the Prince Regent) to build a collection of grand villas for the ‘wealthy and the good’, as well as a new access route, which would be known as the Regent’s Street. Nash didn’t come close to completing his original brief, but the work that he did finish was certainly magnificent. In 1836 it was decided to allow the public access to the park for two days a week. By the 1860s it was attracting thousands all year round. Today it has been developed into London’s largest grass sporting area, offering more than 40 pitches for a wide range of sports. Regent’s Park is now scheduled to be used in the 2012 Olympic programme.
Famous Residents
According to our central London estate agent, legendary writer and creator of the famous War Of The Worlds, HG Wells lived in a Regent’s Park property on Hanover Street, west of the park, as did the great English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. About 100 years earlier, in 1791, the visiting Austrian composer, Joseph Haydn, moved to a farm on rural Lisson Grove in order to enjoy some peace and quiet while composing.
Location, Location
For the purposes of this introductory guide, our estate agents in Regent’s Park tell us that the gorgeous Regent’s Park area represents a natural and northerly extension to glamorous Marylebone, stretching down as far as Marylebone Road to the south, Hampstead Road to the east and Lisson Road to the west. It offers easy access to the West End, the City and Heathrow airport.
Neighbourhood view
The roads around the Park are dwarfed by the wide open spaces beyond, even though they do include some of the capital’s most prominent properties. Regent’s Park properties are spectacularly large and command significant prices. Our Regent’s Park estate agents tell us that there aren’t too many flats but the ones that do exist are huge — and even the late-Victorian ones run well into the millions. The extended area offers a rewarding mixture of Georgian facades, Victorian houses and Edwardian cottages — all combining with post-war estates to create an intriguing and desirable landscape of Regent’s Park properties.
Essential Living
The area is ideal for families, allowing access to a good selection of schools. There is, of course, a tremendous range of sporting facilities available in the park which is the main selling angle for Regent’s Park estate agents. Choose from football, rugby, cricket, tennis, athletics, netball, softball and rounders. Plus, in this part of town, you’re never too far from useful day-to-day shops and services.

On The Town
No shortage of selling points for our Regent’s Park estate agents here. The charming Garden Café (Inner Circle, Regent’s Park) has been carefully nurtured amidst Queen Mary's Rose Garden to provide a tranquil day-time restaurant for locals. At the other end of the scale, The Landmark London Hotel (222 Marylebone Road) combines awesome Victorian architecture with distinctive, five-star service and luxury. Home to a collection of fine dining rooms, its breathtaking Winter Garden atrium restaurant serves a mouthwatering Champagne Brunch, with live jazz, every Sunday. But if pub lunches are more your thing, then the Windsor Castle (98 Park Road) is one Regent’s Park property that is sure to delight. A proper Georgian pub, it offers a welcome range of beers, plus a particularly tasty Thai-styled menu. More relaxed still, is the oddly-spelt Edinboro Castle (56 Mornington Terrace), which comes into its own during the summer months, when the large beer garden and extravagant barbecues provide a perfect refuge for exhausted park walkers. For cool cocktails get down to Positively 4th Street (119 Hampstead Road), aNew York-style bar named after the classic Bob Dylan hit. Or for refined, gourmet Spanish cuisine, visit L’Albufera (at the Melia White House Hotel, Albany Street). Finally, the Sea Shell Restaurant (49 Lisson Grove) has a great reputation for fish and chips. Far enough from the tourist landmarks of Madame Tussaud’s and the Planetarium, it is said to attract a steady stream of celebrities.

Did You Know?
The best known ‘resident’ of the Regent’s Park area didn’t ‘live’ here at all. 221b Baker Street was the fictional address of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s world-famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. And even though countless attempts have been made to identify ‘his’ actual house, using clues from all the books, our Regent’s Park estate agents tell us that the truth is that the Regent’s Park property of 221 Baker Street did not even exist at the time Conan Doyle was writing the stories.
