Perfectly positioned opposite Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, The Swan in Bayswater is an historic coaching inn probably dating back to the 17th century. It is reputed to have been the final drinking place for victims of the Tyburn Gallows, which was sited close to what is now Marble Arch.
It is thought that the phrases ‘one for the road’ and ‘on the wagon’ were first coined here. The jailer would draw up outside with the prisoner’s cage and request ‘one for the road’. After the horses pulled away, men at the bar would say, ‘He's on the wagon,’ alluding to the fact the condemned man would never drink again. Today, this popular, family-friendly pub offers traditional hospitality, a great menu and a long list of cask ales and wines. There is also a lovely garden and great live music on a Saturday night.
