Hidden in this quiet corner of central London, in a former pub that was famously frequented by Sir Winston Churchill, Angelus is a favourite retreat for well-heeled locals and discerning business types.
The charismatic French owner, Thierry Tomasin, was once Chairman Sommelier of Britain so the wine list is pretty good.
The menu represents a modern take on French classics, with tasty dishes expertly delivered by French chef, Pierre Needham.
Angelus prides itself on being an all day refuge. It’s ideal for breakfast or a mid-day meet and, of course, for ladies who like to get together at lunchtime. In the evening it’s perfect for an informal gathering or romantic dinner for two.
Thierry Tomasin’s attention to detail is impressive and he hasn’t missed a trick with the design and styling. The art deco re-fit is enhanced by red banquet seating, Belle Époque mirrors, dark mahogany trimmings and solid oak flooring. There is a separate, warmly lit lounge for pre or post-dinner drinks and the whole ‘brasserie de luxe’ has been delightfully dressed with vintage artwork.
The festive season is especially charming here. In addition to routine restaurant bookings, Thierry Tomasin’s team can arrange a bespoke Christmas party for up to 22 guests in the Private Dining Room.
