Following the success of his original women’s store, The Place London, Simon Burstein has subsequently opened The Place London for Men.
The former CEO of South Molton Street’s legendary Browns boutique – and son of its founder, Joan – Burstein’s business DNA runs rich in retail know-how. And, once again, he seems to have a crowd pleaser on his hands.
Now a leading wholesaler, retailer and licensed café, Buchanan’s Cheesemonger supplies some of London’s best restaurants and hotels with a wide selection of cheeses, hand-picked from around 100 makers throughout Britain and Europe.
Technically a fashion ‘start-up’, this glamorous store showcases a handpicked selection of designers and brands, each displaying the highest standards of creativity and craftsmanship. Stand out labels include the Belgian menswear designer Sofie D’Hoore and the Italian fashion brand Lardini.
Downstairs, the store is home to Leathersmith of London, along with its chic, contemporary bag collection, Brady. With all items handmade in England, the range includes washbags and carry-ons, plus shooting and fishing bags, too.
In the evenings, the retail space is used for cheese masterclasses and supper clubs. Private and corporate tastings may also be arranged for up to 18 guests.
Illustrations by the late, great Colin Barnes cover the walls, while luxurious velvet furnishings also complement the refined style of the store.
Burstein is hugely passionate about this enterprise, especially its location.
‘I really like Connaught Village,’ he says.
‘It’s a destination spot, with the sort of charm that South Molton Street had 30 years ago.’
