Caffè Caldesi is an authentic Italian caffè and restaurant, offering proper Italian food in the middle of Marylebone. So, what’s the story?
Italian restaurateur, Giancarlo, met English artist, Katie, in 1997. He loved her painting and she loved his pasta. They now have two restaurants (the other is in Bray, Berkshire), a cookery school and two sons.
With recipes reputedly inspired by Giancarlo’s mother, Caffè Caldesi opened in 2002 as an informal bar and restaurant, showcasing the best of Italy’s regional cooking.
In 2005, Giancarlo and Katie married and opened La Cucina Caldesi, a cookery school where the couple could share trade secrets with local foodies. Eleven years on, they’re still doing it.
Inevitably, television came calling, and the Caldesis were invited to make ‘Return to Tuscany’ for the BBC. A huge success, they have since appeared on several major shows, including Masterchef and Saturday Kitchen. The couple have also penned a selection of well-received books.
Giancarlo Caldesi has always tried to do everything the Italian way and, in 2010, the Italian government awarded him the Cavaliere del Lavoro in recognition of his efforts to promote Italy abroad.
So, if Caffè Caldesi is authentic enough for the Italian government… it should certainly be authentic enough for us.
