Rococo was established in March 1983 by a young graduate, Chantal Coady, and has since developed into one of the world’s best-loved chocolate brands.
Chantal had been determined to change the way fine chocolate was perceived and presented, and set out to transform the stale routine of chocolate retailing.
Armed with a little knowledge, a lot of passion and a strong belief that there was room for a different approach to the business of chocolate, Chantal opened her inaugural Rococo shop in Chelsea. One of her earliest customers was the writer Joanne Harris, and it has been suggested that Chantal may have been the inspiration behind Joanne’s smash-hit book and movie, ‘Chocolat’.
My family moved here in the 1960s and the area has so much going for it – the parks, squares, schools, shops and restaurants. I know Marylebone and I feel at home here.’
After more than three decades, four shops and five chocolate books of her own, Chantal is still a pioneer, inspiring Marylebone locals with her warm and inviting Moxon Street shop, delicately flavoured chocolate and alluring, creative packaging.
The Academy of Chocolate has formally recognised Chantal for ‘Changing The Way People Think About Chocolate’, while the Wall Street Journal has called her the founder of a ‘New British School’ of chocolate.
In 2014 Chantal Coady was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours ‘For Services To Chocolate’. That hasn’t happened too often.
