Launched in May 2017, the 730 sq m Floating Pocket Park provides a striking and colourful public space on the Grand Union Canal in the Paddington Basin.
Unique in London, the park offers lawn, seating and densely planted borders. The space has been designed to encourage wildlife and includes a separate pontoon to attract ground-nesting birds.
The project forms part of the Greater London Authority’s ‘green infrastructure’, which is an ongoing initiative to improve and connect streets, squares, parks and waterways throughout London.
A contemporary-style pavilion provides support for plants and shade for visitors. It is also a handy venue for local events. With a capacity of 120, the pavilion continues to extend Merchant Square’s successful entertainments programme.
The Floating Pocket Park is open all year and will, of course, change with the seasons. Expect bright bulbs in spring, herbaceous blooms in summer, stem colours in autumn and scented flowers in winter.
Commissioned by European Land and Property Ltd and designed by acclaimed gardener Tony Woods of the Garden Club – the man behind the John Lewis roof garden on Oxford Street in 2014 – the park is an innovative way of encouraging the local community to connect.
