Montague Street, London WC1
Sherlock says that he lived in Montague Street before moving to Baker Street. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself took rooms here, close to the British Museum, when he arrived in London in 1881. He set up an ophthalmic practice in Upper Wimpole Street. Between the two is this warehouse-style, split-level, two-bedroom duplex, available to rent for £775 a week.

221B Baker Street, London NW1
The Sherlock Holmes Museum at 221B Baker Street is famous the world over. When the Holmes stories were published, Baker Street did not stretch as far as 221. Later, when the street was extended, 219-229 was the home of the Abbey National Building Society, which employed somebody full time to answer all the mail that arrived for Sherlock. The museum set up in the same block, but is actually to be found between Nos 237 and 241. A conundrum fit for the great detective. But Baker Street is the important part of the address, and you can buy this four-bedroom apartment – and share in the magic - for £2.1m.

Paddington Station, London W2
This great London terminus is where Watson leaves for Dartmoor with Sir Henry Baskerville and Dr Mortimer in The Hound of the Baskervilles. It has other famous literary connections, too. It also features in Agatha Christie’s 4.50 from Paddington, and Michael Bond’s bear from deepest, darkest Peru is named after it. You can rent this five-bedroom house just minutes from the station for £1,995 a week.

Madame Tussauds, Marylebone Road, London NW1
If you go for the Sherlock Holmes Experience, you’ll take a trip through lamp-lit Victorian alleys and into the great detective’s drawing room. The waxworks will immerse you in the life and tales of Holmes and Watson. Just around the corner in Glentworth Street, this fifth-floor flat has three bedrooms and is on the market for £1.4m.

Speedy’s Café, North Gower Street, London NW1
This little café with its red sun canopy has become a hit with tourists after appearing in the BBC drama Sherlock. The film crew were unable to film exterior shots on Baker Street, because the traffic was too heavy, so they used the flat above the café on North Gower Street. If you buy this two-bedroom flat in nearby Gosfield Street, you will easily be able to breakfast here. The property is on the market for £1.1m.

The Criterion, London W1
This restaurant on Piccadilly is where Dr Watson first hears about Sherlock Holmes. It opened in 1874 but closed its doors in 2015 to reopen as the Savini at the Criterion. The date on which Watson learns about Holmes, when both were seeking a flatmate to share rooms, was January 1, 1881. Just a short stroll away is this modern one-bedroom apartment, which is available to rent for £700 a week.

Leinster Gardens, London W2
This smart London terrace conceals a mystery worthy of Sherlock. Nos 23 and 24 are a sham, with fake windows and no letterboxes. The facades were built to hide the railway line that cuts across the street. From the street, the terrace continues as expected, while the plumes of smoke from the steam trains on the Metropolitan Line were hidden behind the frontages. This nearby three-bedroom mews house is no illusion. You can buy it for £2.95m.

The Sherlock Holmes, London WC2
This pub, bursting with memorabilia, is very popular with fans of the famous detective. The building was, in the 1880s, a small hotel known as the Northumberland Arms and the Turkish baths that Holmes and Watson used were next door. You can find it on Northumberland Street near Charing Cross Station. If you rent this two-bedroom flat for £595 a week, you can take the Bakerloo line from Baker Street, and it’s just three stops to Charing Cross.

Eaton Square, London SW1W

Irene Adler is introduced as a character in the short story A Scandal in Bohemia. The BBC’s version of Sherlock has her living on Eaton Square. The interior shots of her home were actually filmed in Wales. A strong, “exceptional” woman, Irene wins the respect of Holmes, and finally outsmarts him. This exceptional split-level apartment in Beaufort Gardens is available to rent at £995 a week.

Millbank Prison, London SW1
This Pimlico penitentiary served as a holding facility for most of the 19th century for convicts awaiting transportation to Australia. It features in The Sign of the Four, as well as in Charles Dickens’ Bleak House. It was demolished and Tate Britain now stands on part of the site, while the bricks were used to build the Millbank Estate. This luxurious two-bedroom apartment is available to rent for £895 a week.
