History Of Knightsbridge

The area of Knightsbridge dates back to the 11th century. Local legends maintain the name originated from two knights having a fatal duel on the bridge over the Westbourne River. In remembrance, it was dubbed Knightsbridge.

In the 17th century, Charles Sloane Cadogan, 1st Earl Cadogan, granted a lease to architect Henry Holland to develop Hans Town, Sloane Street, and Sloane Square. Holland designed the street layout, built houses, and sold building rights on the development.

In the 19th century, Knightsbridge welcomed landmark development stores Harrods and Harvey Nichols, and with a boom in retail, King's Road became the centre of British fashion we know today.
